Pastor Kevin Rutledge

Topics:

On Sunday, March 16, 2025, Berwyn United Methodist Church held its Charge Conference, presided over by South District Superintendent Evelyn Clark Kent. The meeting focused on the church’s mission, financial updates, upcoming projects, and the transition of Berwyn United Methodist Nursery School into the Berwyn Early Learning Academy (BELA).

Key Discussions and Decisions

Church Finances and Mortgage Refinancing

Pastor Kevin Rutledge presented financial summaries for 2024 and 2025, noting that the church has ten years left on its mortgage. Three options for refinancing were presented, with the preferred option including an additional $60,000 to fund an air conditioning installation for BELA. A motion was made and approved by a vote of 15 in favor and 2 opposed.

Berwyn Early Learning Academy (BELA)

Pastor Kevin introduced Morgan Otto, the new director of BELA, who addressed concerns regarding enrollment, upcoming summer programs, and building improvements needed for licensing compliance. With 10 families already interested in enrolling, Morgan emphasized BELA’s commitment to providing high-quality early childhood education while strengthening connections with the church.

Facility Improvements

Several facility projects were discussed, including:

  • Air conditioning installation for BELA
  • Parsonage deck replacement (quotes still being gathered)
  • Additional bathrooms for BELA
  • Repairs to flooring near Schieck Hall
  • Ongoing concerns about roof leaks

Questions were raised about prioritizing the most urgent repairs, particularly the roof, which has had persistent issues since installation.

Community Engagement and Church Growth

Concerns were shared about the need for stronger connections between the nursery school families and the church community. Ideas were discussed to encourage participation, such as alternative worship opportunities and service involvement.

Security and Compliance

Security measures for BELA were addressed, including controlled entry for parents, classroom cameras, and monthly fire drills. Compliance with Safe Sanctuary requirements and future facility needs, such as additional sinks and fencing, were also discussed.

Moving Forward

The Charge Conference concluded with a motion to refinance the church mortgage with the Loan Board, incorporating an additional $60,000 for the BELA air conditioning project. This motion passed, marking a significant step in supporting the church’s long-term vision for its early learning ministry.

We are grateful for the thoughtful discussions and decisions made during this meeting and look forward to continuing to grow as a church that serves its community in meaningful ways.

Special Session Of Charge Conference - March 16th

Published: February 16, 2025

Sunday, March 16th at 11:15 AM (Following Worship) Berwyn United Methodist Church will hold a special session of Charge Conference on Sunday, March 16th at 11:15 AM, immediately following worship. The purpose of this session is to discuss and decide on the church’s mortgage and funding options for essential building improvements related to our transition to a full-day childcare program. Key Considerations: Our current mortgage rate has increased from 4.14% to 6.73%. Option 1: Refinance the entire mortgage with the United Methodist Loan Board at its current rate of 5.25%, while adding a modest amount to fund necessary building improvements, including: Air conditioning (most pressing need) Bathroom additions (child-sized toilets) Furnishings for childcare spaces Safety and security measures to ensure church ministry can continue while childcare is in session. We have requested three estimates for air conditioning and will explore costs for other improvements. Option 2: Keep the loan as it is and borrow against the $100,000 invested with the Loan Fund, as our endowment is invested with the Mid-Atlantic Foundation and this is a viable alternative. This decision is crucial for the future of our church and the successful launch of Berwyn Early Learning Academy. All members are strongly encouraged to attend, ask questions, and participate in this important conversation. For questions or more information, please contact Pastor Kevin or a member of the Leadership Team.
