1. Observations:

Read through the text and notice details that stand out to you as you read.  Below is a list of items that may come to mind.

  • God compares his love for Israel to the love of a parent for a child. (v. 1)
  • God has loved Israel since they were a child, and he has continued to love them even though they have been unfaithful to him. (v. 1-3)
  • God has cared for Israel and taught them how to walk. (v. 3-4)
  • God has drawn Israel close to him with cords of kindness. (v. 4)
  • God has been like a yoke to Israel, lifting them up and leading them. (v. 4)
  • God's heart is torn by Israel's unfaithfulness, but he still loves them and longs to heal them. (v. 5-6)
  • God cannot destroy Israel because of his great love for them. (v. 7-9)

2. Interpretation:
