Prelude

Welcome

Call to Worship

Leader: God gives us each a purpose.
People: God gives us all a purpose.

Leader: Sometimes living with purpose looks bright and cheerful.
People: Sometimes living with purpose challenges and pushes us.

Leader: We worship Jesus whose purpose led to the cross – and beyond!
People: And today, we follow the Spirit who leads us through obstacles to a life of love and service.

All: Amen!

Opening Hymn

Standing on the Promises UMH 374

Prayer of Confession

God, we sometimes think that the goal of life is happiness. Too often we place our feelings of happiness over the needs of others and over your purpose. You show us that true flourishing is so much bigger than that. Forgive us when we place our will and our desires over your desire for justice and mercy. Help us, today, to trust that in living out your purposes for us, we will experience true joy and fulfilment. Help us to know, deep in our souls, that we have a part to play in your vision for all of humanity and creation. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Leader: Nothing can separate us from the love of God, including our sins and our failings.  Know that through the confession of your sins you have been offered forgiveness and healing.
All: through the love of Christ, we are forgiven.

Offertory Prayer

Lord of life, you lead us with purpose into places and moments that we may have never chosen on our own. You surprise us with the abundance of life that we find there and with our own role in creating it. Receive, bless, and direct our use of these gifts today so we can continue to be a part of your life-giving mission in this world. It is in your name we pray. Amen.

Reflections and Caring Conversations

Please use the prompts and prayers below to aid you in your devotions for this week.

  • OPTIONAL SPIRITUAL PRACTICE FOR THE WEEK:

Practice the art of noticing this week. At the beginning or end of every day this week, commit to spending 5 minutes in silence and think about what happened in your day. Perhaps break it up into the morning, afternoon, and evening – so that you can really stop and think about what you did that day. Ask yourself: Where did I experience joy today – or what felt fulfilling? What choices do I need to make to experience more joy in my day tomorrow?
